When signing up your account, this is the minimum length requirement for your username. Dictionary words and common first/surnames are not permitted except for Enhanced and Full account user names.

If you are going on an extended vacation you can put your account "on hold" which causes messages to not be delivered (the sender gets back a message that your account is on hold) but the account will not be closed.
Commercial use allowed No commercial use allowed Yes Yes Yes

As part of the terms of service you agree to when signing up, Guest accounts are not allowed to be used in relation to commercial activities.

Regardless of the account level, you may not use your account for surveys, contests, pyramid schemes, multi-level marketing schemes, chain letters, junk email, spamming or any duplicative or unsolicited messages.

Backup email address required Yes - to confirm membership No No No

When signing up a Guest account, you are required to provide a backup email address to which we will send an activation email before you can use your account. This is to help us combat email abuse.

Ad Free, Full and Enhanced accounts don't require a backup email address, but we highly recommend it. We only ever use the backup email address for important notifications such as over-quota messages, lost password requests, etc.

Email
A great email service is our primary purpose. It goes without saying that we use the highest quality co-location facility and computer equipment to ensure the most reliable service possible.
Email access methods GUEST AD FREE FULL ENHANCED
Web-based email Yes Yes Yes Yes
All account levels include our clean and powerful web interface to access your email
IMAP (email) Yes Yes Yes Yes

All account levels include IMAP access to your email. IMAP is similar to POP3, but much more powerful as it provides a way to "synchronise" what you see at home/work in your email software and what you see through the web interface.

Most email software supports IMAP and we highly recommend IMAP over POP3. More details on IMAP's advantages and how to setup your email client are available in this help page.

POP3 (email) No Yes Yes Yes
POP3 is basic mail reading protocol that allows downloading of email to a local computer via email software. To encourage email best practice usage and avoid spam drop boxes, we only provide POP3 access to paid accounts. We recommend IMAP instead which is provided to all service levels.
WAP (email) Yes Yes Yes Yes
WAP provides a way to read and send emails via most mobile phones. We don't provide you with Internet access over the phone, you have to check with your mobile phone carrier to see if they provide you with that, but once you have Internet access over your phone you can access your email by going to http://wap.fastmail.fm (replace 'fastmail.fm' with your chosen "home domain") on your phone's WAP browser.
SMTP (sending email) No Yes Yes Yes

IMAP and POP3 access allow you to retrieve email from our servers to your email software, however to send an email from your email software you need to use SMTP.

Almost all ISPs provide access to an SMTP server, so for most people use of our SMTP server will not be necessary (since you can use our server for reading mail with IMAP while your ISP's SMTP server is used for send messages). People who use multiple ISP's but do not want to switch SMTP servers regularly will probably want to use our SMTP server.

Email features GUEST AD FREE FULL ENHANCED
Virus scanning Basic Advanced Advanced Advanced
Advanced: received messages are checked by our virus scanner on the server, which can be turned on or off for each account. Basic: messages are checked for some common email worms.
Spam protection Basic Advanced Advanced Advanced
Advanced: received messages are analysed by a sophisticated spam identification algorithm which uses many different heuristics to grade each message; fully customisable filtering based on "spam score"; messages from POP and Hotmail links also checked. Basic: Source of each message is checked for likely spam sources.
Mail Forwarding No Yes Yes Yes
Guests cannot use any email forwarding. All other accounts get full custom forwarding, where certain emails can be forwarded based on criteria, and optionally a copy can be left on the server.
Own subdomain No Yes - receive email sent to anything@username.fastmail.fm
(replace 'fastmail.fm' with your chosen account domain, see below for own domains)

Ad Free, Full and Enhanced accounts get access to their very own subdomain. For instance, the account "yourname@fastmail.fm" gets to use the domain "yourname.fastmail.fm". Any email sent to any address in this domain will be sent to the the users mailbox. In addition, email sent to "foldername@yourname.fastmail.fm" will automatically be filed into a folder called "foldername" for you.

These features are great for managing mailing lists, registrations, and for avoiding spam by setting up reject filters for addresses that get on spammers' lists. See this help page for more details.

External POP/Hotmail Retrieval Yes

Del or keep up to 6 months
Yes
Del or keep (forever possible)

You can download email from external POP3 accessible email and Hotmail accounts into your account so you can consolidate all your email into one place.

Note: Hotmail have disabled external access to new accounts, and some non-paying old accounts, so if you rely on retrieving email from Hotmail, we recommend testing this first with a free account.

Obviously we'd recommend ditching Hotmail entirely and starting with a new email address with us. While Hotmail tries to lock you into using their web interface, we provide multiple and open ways (IMAP, POP, etc) to access your email.

Aliases/Own domain email GUEST AD FREE FULL ENHANCED
Aliases No Same username at 2 additional domains 6 regular (5+ chars in length)
1 short (2+ chars in length)
30 regular (5+ chars in length)
3 short (2+ chars in length)

Aliases allow you to create multiple different email addresses, all of which direct email to your account. This can be useful for keeping business/work separate, or as a way to reduce spam. By creating a number of aliases and signing up for different services with different aliases, if one of the addresses starts getting lots of spam, you can just disable/remove that alias. For more details, see this help page.

Aliases also provide a security mechanism. If you signup your account with an obscure name, and then create an alias and only send email with your alias as the From address, and only tell people about your alias, then no-one will even know your account name, and thus cannot even attempt to guess your accounts password because they don't know the account name.

Ad Free can sign up for one additional address, which is their existing username in an additional domain. Full accounts get 6 aliases, which can be different names in any of of our domains (dictionary words and common first/surnames are not permitted). Enhanced accounts can have 30 aliases in any of our domains.

Virtual domains and aliases allow you to use your own domain to receive email at. Details of that are below.

Use your own domains No No No 50 domains
500 domain aliases

Own domain aliases/domains (or virtual aliases/virtual domains) allow you to use your own domain for receiving email to your account. See this help page for more details.

Note that we currently don't support separate accounts in your domain for individual accounts. You can however signup multiple regular accounts, and then direct email from a particular name to each account. For example:

name1@yourdomain.com->youraccount@fastmail.fm
name2@yourdomain.com->parentaccount@fastmail.fm

If you want multiple accounts in your own domain, you should check out our Family and Business account features.

Email storage and transfer limits GUEST AD FREE FULL ENHANCED
Mail storage quota 25MB 100MB 1000MB (1GB) 10000MB (10GB)
How many megabytes of storage space is provided for email. A warning is sent if an account goes over 95% full.
Extra mail storage Not supported $4.95/year per 100MB $4.95/year per 500MB $4.95/year per 1000MB (1GB)
If you reach your storage quota, Ad Free, Full and Enhanced users can purchase additional storage space.
Maximum attachment size 10MB 20MB 30MB 50MB
The largest size for the total of all attachments to a message, either sending or receiving. Slightly larger attachments may get through depending on their encoding, but this is the guaranteed maximum.
Mailing list binaries allowed No Yes Yes Yes
Accounts may not be used for sending or receiving messages to mailing lists which contain large attachments if you are not a member. These types of lists (e.g. adult images distribution lists) generate very high traffic and too many complaints and are too expensive for us to provide for Guest accounts.
To avoid spamming and abuse to/from our service, we implement the following hourly and monthly transfer quotas
Hourly message quota 80 400 1000 2000
Number of message items permitted through account in one hour. A "message item" is one message sent to one recipient. So the same message sent to 20 recipients is counted as 20 message items. Guest accounts have lower quotas to avoid the possibility of mail abuse.
Hourly transfer quota 20MB 60MB 150MB 500MB
Amount of traffic permitted through account in one hour. Account will be locked for an hour if this limit is reached.
Monthly transfer quota
(expires at the end of each month)
80 MB 320 MB 600 MB
(+1.2 GB bonus on signup)
2 GB
(+4 GB bonus on signup)
How many megabytes of traffic can go through the account. A one megabyte message to one recipient results in two megabytes of traffic, since it is received from your PC (1MB) and sent to the recipient (1MB). Sending a one megabyte message to nine people creates ten megabytes of traffic, using the same logic.

On signup or upgrade, Full and Enhanced accounts receive a bonus bandwidth quota. If you go above your monthly quota, the excess is taken from your bonus. Unlike the regular monthly quota, any bonus not used in a month is rolled over to the next month.

Extra transfer quota
(never expires)
Not supported $14/GB $10/GB $8/GB
Cost of extra traffic beyond the monthly transfer quota. If you exceed your monthly quota above, you can purchase extra transfer quota. Anything you use above your monthly quota will be subtracted from the extra you purchased. Any extra quota you purchased left over at the end of the month is rolled over to the next month automatically.
File storage
Included with all accounts is a file storage feature. With this feature you can upload and store files securely on our server to access when ever and where ever you are. You can easily copy attachments from emails into the file storage, or attach files onto new emails as attachments. You can also publish some or all of your files as a web site for friends to access.

You can easily publish files from your file storage to a website. You have complete control over which files are accessible and what pathname/hostname they are accessible at. There is also a photo gallery service, which will automatically turn a directory of uploaded files into a simple photo gallery friends can see and access.

Note that we currently don't support any scripting or database services, this is just a basic hosting service to show files/directories.
